The Dr. Jitendra Kar Memorial Award: Honoring a Legacy of Surgical Excellence, Innovation, and Education

The Indian American Urology Association is proud to honor the legacy of Dr. Jitendra Kar, a distinguished surgeon from Bombay, India, through an award and fellowship established in his memory.

 Dr. Kar was a renowned general surgeon whose particular expertise and pioneering contributions were in the field of male infertility surgery. In 1975, in collaboration with Dr. A. G. Phadke, he published what was then ( and probably today) the world’s largest series of vasoepididymal anastomoses, making a significant contribution to the advancement of male infertility surgery. His expertise was recognized internationally, and he was invited to present his experience at several international infertility meetings. Surgeons from the United States and Europe also traveled to Bombay to observe his surgical techniques firsthand.

A gold medalist in surgery, Dr. Kar graduated from King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in 1944. He subsequently served as a consulting surgeon at St. George’s Hospital and National Hospital (now Hinduja Hospital) in Bombay, continuing his distinguished clinical career until his retirement in 1987. In addition to his surgical achievements, he was deeply committed to medical education and served as Clinical Professor at Grant Medical College, where he taught and mentored generations of medical students and surgical residents.

The Dr. Jitendra Kar Memorial Award seeks to carry forward his enduring commitment to surgical excellence, innovation, and education. The award provides a qualified urologist from India with the opportunity to visit a center of excellence in the United States to observe the latest technologies, advanced surgical techniques, and contemporary approaches to patient care, with the goal of applying this knowledge to the management of patients in India.

Through this initiative, the Indian American Urology Association celebrates Dr. Kar’s remarkable contributions to medicine while investing in the future of urology in India. The award reflects the enduring value of international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mentorship in advancing medical care.

In honoring Dr. Jitendra Kar, we celebrate not only an exceptional surgeon and educator, but also a legacy that continues to inspire innovation, excellence, and service to patients.
